My new obsession, good-bye “Fourth Wing”
The Crimson Moth by Kristen Ciccarelli is everything I want from a witchy book. For so long I have searched for a witchy fantasy book to grip me and I have finally stumbled upon this…
The thing that gets me though is why is no one talking about this? I have only saw one other person reading this on bookstagram and this baffles me.
On the night Rune’s life changed forever, blood ran in the streets. Now, in the aftermath of a devastating revolution, witches have been diminished from powerful rulers to outcasts ruthlessly hunted due to their waning magic, and Rune must hide what she is.
Spending her days pretending to be nothing more than a vapid young socialite, Rune spends her nights as the Crimson Moth, a witch vigilante who rescues her kind from being purged. When a rescue goes wrong, she decides to throw the witch hunters off her scent and gain the intel she desperately needs by courting the handsome Gideon Sharpe – a notorious and unforgiving witch hunter loyal to the revolution – who she can’t help but find herself falling for.
Gideon loathes the decadence and superficiality Rune represents, but when he learns the Crimson Moth has been using Rune’s merchant ships to smuggle renegade witches out of the republic, he inserts himself into her social circles by pretending to court her right back. He soon realizes that beneath her beauty and shallow façade, is someone fiercely intelligent and tender who feels like his perfect match. Except, what if she’s the very villain he’s been hunting?
It was complete happenstance that I walked into Waterstones and it caught my eye. I am so thankful for that random trip – this is my new obsession, my favourite read of 2024 so far!
But what is The Crimson Moth about??
It’s about a vigilante witch working by night as ‘The Crimson Moth’ to save fellow witches from death. For on her island, witches are outlawed and being one or helping one will result in a swift death from the Witch Hunters.
On the hunt to save a witch, our main protagonist finds herself having to get close to a witch hunter- her best friend’s older brother – to get some answers. Unbeknownst to Rune, our vigilante witch, the hunter suspects her for being ‘The Crimson Moth’
As their courtship progresses they both begin to question how far they will go to uphold their morals.
This enemies to lovers fantasy romance is just a perfect blend or mystery, action, magic and suspense! Ending on an epic cliffhanger that has me longing for the next instalment.
The magic system in my opinion is exceptional, one that I have not came across. Magic through the use of blood is such a unique and interesting take on witchcraft and I can’t wait to find out more about the limitations. For if a witch was to use the blood of another, taken without their permission, what would that do to the witch?
The interaction between Rune & Gideon is so much fun for the reader with the perfect blend of lust and hatred. As the story progresses we see their fake courtship becoming something more. The fabric flowers he sews are just a lovely gesture and I just died with fluffy emotions.
When it is revealed that Verity is actually the thought dead Witch Queen, my jaw dropped. Whilst I knew there was something amiss with her character, I couldn’t put my finger on what exactly was off with her.
This was most definitely I nice little twist and i’m excited to see where this story is going to go.
It’s safe to say the ending had me crying over the loss of Alex, Rune’s best friend and Gideon’s little brother. This was heart-breaking. It’s rare I shed a tear over a book but this truly choked me up.
