Camp 1985 – Book Review

A massive thankyou to the team over at Pride Book Tours and the Author Matthew R Corr for having me on this book tour.

I was gifted the E-book in exchange for an honest review. I can comfortably guarantee this has not affected my reviewing process.

Enter the nostalgia-laced world of CAMP 1985, A bogus new summer program where parents send their social-media-addicted teens to unplug and make face-to-face connections without the help of a screen.

Ander expects a fun weekend getaway with other influencers but instead finds himself trapped in a radical landscape without wifi.

Just when Ander gives in to camp life and starts crushing on a cute gamer boy, a little fun with a spirit board unleashes a vengeful spirit of a bygone era. Now, with danger lurking behind every tree, Ander and his fellow campers must navigate a twisted game of survival against a retro evil determined to off them one by one.

Who will survive?

My Thoughts

If you write a book surrounding camp slashers, you can guarantee I’ll read it. So seriously, if you are reading this and you’re an author with a similar book – message me!

I’m so thankful to the team over at Pride Book Tours for reaching out and asking me to be a part of the Instagram Book Tour for Camp 1985 because I LOVED THIS.

The story follows a group of social media influencers invited to a 80’s themed camp for a trial week to help promote it. Little do they know, that’s not the reason why they’re really there. They’re there to help switch off from their phones at the behest of their parents and guardians.

What’s the worst thing that can happen to a group of social media addicted teenagers in the middle of nowhere WITH NO INTERNET!!?

Surely that’s the nightmare, that’s the horror, that’s the story?? Nope.

There’s someone, or something hunting the campers down, killing them one by one in true 80’s camp horror style. For fans of Slasher movies such as ‘Friday The 13th’ and ‘The Evil Dead’.

I found the author had a wonderful writing style for the story, adding pop culture references such as popular 80’s movies, pop stars and politics. The characters were interesting and of course, with good writing you (the reader) find yourself wanting certain characters to die… in this case, some of your wishes may be granted.

The gory scenes were just fantastic, although I personally could have done with more drawn out, gory descriptions.

My only fault with the story is the end, but upon speaking to the author I can see why it ended the way it did… the story isn’t over! So prepare yourself for a cliffhanger…

Matthew, if you are reading this. You have yourself a new fan! I thank you for writing this. Here’s to the next instalment.

Now, if you haven’t read this yet… this is your final warning. I will be discussing certain things that WILL SPOIL the book for you…

Okay, so can I first just mention that I absolutely could not stand. The smile that appeared on my face when Gabe got killed. I love how much I disliked him. He was just the classic douche in a horror movie that inevitably bites the dust and I was all there for it!

The ending I really enjoyed but I personally struggled with the no true “Final Boy” there was multiple which was a shame as i’m just a sucker for the “Final” character to survive and live alone knowing they’re the only survivor. That being said, it was rather refreshing to have this surprise.
