It’s the season of King (not looking outside 👀 it’s autumn for me)
Starting my autumn TBR off in style and quality this year with this absolute delight of a book.
Mr Mercedes will be the first (and definitely not the last) Stephen King novel I will be reviewing. I have definitely started strong…
Book Synopsis
Who is going to be the fish in this relationship, and who is going to be the fisherman?
BILL HODGES
retired cop, tormented by ‘the Mercedes massacre’, a case he never solved.
BRADY HARTSFIELD
perpetrator of that notorious crime, and preparing to kill again.
Spoiler Free Review
This King is an unusual one with a more realistic, down to earth story as opposed to King’s usual mind bending, supernatural elements found in the likes of ” IT ” and “The Shining”.
‘Mr Mercedes’ follows a retired detective ( Bill Hodges ) on the brink of giving up, finds himself thrown back into one of his unsolved cases- The Mercedes Killer.
A Cat and Mouse style plot following the two, you really get a sense of urgency, suspense and thrill from this read.
With a rather disturbing and twisted background. You get a look into the life of the killer and why he is the way he is.
Now I know this trilogy gets a bit bizarre in the next two instalments but this one ends nicely so can be left here if you’re not after a supernatural spooky classic King style horror. I enjoyed this enough that I do want to see where this trilogy leads.
Side Characters I loved; Janie and Holly. Holly stole the show massively for me, and it’s made me want to read his most recent release to follow that character more.

Now, this section will mention some spoilers discussing parts of the story. So please only read ahead if you have read Mr Mercedes.
Final warning !
Okay, so firstly I’d like to address the messed up relationship between Bradie and his Mother… the incestuous, co-dependant relationship was most definitely disturbing to read. I’ve watched Series One of the TV show, so I knew it was coming but reading about it made it somehow… worse??
When his mother ate the poisoned hamburger, is it wrong that I didn’t care that she died? That I was somewhat glad? Just so I didn’t have to read about her nipples or her “Panties” anymore
The scene in which she dies was a lot tamer than I was expecting from King. With this said, the TV show actually portrayed this scene in a more in-depth, graphic and disturbing detail. If you haven’t watched the show yet, I employ you!
